Volunteer with Corvallis Homeless Shelter

When:               Now until March 17, 2014

Where:             Men's Overnight Shelter, 4th and Western, Corvallis

Description:     The Men's Overnight Shelter is operated by the Corvallis Homeless Shelter Coalition from Nov.15-March 15. The shelter is open from 7pm until 7am and has beds for 40 men. Volunteers staff the shelter from 7pm until 11p.m. when a paid staff person and a volunteer arrive. The paid staff person stays awake all night, the volunteer is a sleeper who is there in case the volunteer needs help. It is a easy way to get 8 hours of community service, you just have to sleep! There is internet service if students wish to study etc.

Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers should bring their own bedding such as a sleeping bag and pillow and any other person al items for overnight.

Volunteer at Room at the Inn - Women's Cold Weather Shelter

When:           November 1- March 31, 6:30 p.m. - 7 a.m.

Where:          First United Methodist Church Community Center, 1166 NW Jackson, Corvallis, OR (the large gym-like Community Center.)

Description:   Room at the Inn is a cold weather shelter for women nightly during the cold and rainy season.  Volunteers are needed to welcome the women and get them settled for the night, and a volunteer to sleep overnight as a backup for our paid staff member.  We also need volunteers to supply simple snacks.  If you sign up, you will receive detailed information about your chosen shift or task.  We can also use donations of toiletries and hygiene products. 

The snack provider will drop off a snack by the shelter at 6:30. You do NOT need to stay until 11 p.m.  The two on-site volunteer shifts are

6:30 - 11 p.m.:  You will welcome guests, interact with them as they desire, check out bedding, help with chores.

11 p.m. - 7 a.m:  The overnight volunteer will sleep (serving as a back up to the staff, if there is an emergency), and help the women get something warm to drink and a bite to eat before they leave the shelter.  The shelter facility has wifi, so volunteers can go online after lights out at 10 p.m

Number of Volunteers Needed: 3

Volunteer Requirements: Must be over 18 and have an interest in working with women who have no permanent housing.  The ability to remain calm and to listen and empathize is valuable.  Actual experience in any helping profession teaching, counseling, medical services) is a plus.

South Corvallis Food Bank - Food Bank Assistance

When:  Mondays and Wednesdays 12:30-3:00pm, Thursdays 5:00-7:00pm, Saturdays 9:30am-12pm

Where: 1798 SW 3rd Avenue, Corvallis, OR 97333

Description:   South Corvallis Food Bank welcomes student volunteers who can commit to serving the food bank for a period of time (a term at least). Duties include checking clients into the computer, stocking shelves, escorting clients around as the shop the food bank. There are also opportunities to help with deliveries of food (every other week)  - strong backs/the ability to lift needed.

Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers should schedule a training (it takes about an hour), and should be placed on the master schedule after that training. South Corvallis Food Bank is looking for caring, committed, and reliable volunteers who like people and are sensitive to issues of food security and poverty. Being able to speak Spanish is a plus. Being able to lift 25+ pounds is a plus.

Healthy Youth Program Needs Volunteers for Family Cooking Classes at Community Outreach, Inc.

When: Tuesdays, 4:45-7:15 PM

Where: Community Outreach, Inc., 865 NW Reiman Ave. Corvallis, OR

Description: The Healthy Youth Program offers weekly family cooking classes at Community Outreach, Inc. Each Tuesday evening, children and their parents work together preparing meals to eat as a family. Volunteers will assist the Nutrition Educator with all class components, including helping parents and children prepare meals and engaging younger children (who may not be able to actively participate in the cooking process), as needed.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 3

Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers need to be comfortable working with families of diverse backgrounds, be comfortable engaging children of all ages, and enjoy cooking.

That's My Farmer Program Promotion for Ten Rivers Food Web

When:           Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9am-Noon

Where:          Corvallis Farmers' Market (1st and Jackson)

Description:   Ten Rivers Food Web provides strategic leadership to build a robust and resilient food system in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Volunteers will work with farmers' market staff to raise awareness of the That's My Farmer SNAP program, which increases low-income access to local, healthy food. They will provide educational materials, and explain the program to market attendees. Volunteers will also ask interested attendees to donate to the program.

6 Volunteers Needed

Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 or older, be outgoing and comfortable talking with strangers, and have experience handling money. Volunteers will also need to complete a training in May (date and time TBA).

Data Entry and Office Assistant for Ten Rivers Food Web

When:           1-2 times per month for 2-4 hours

Description:   Ten Rivers Food Web provides strategic leadership to build a robust and resilient food system in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Currently, we are seeking one to two detail-oriented volunteers to enter data for our That's My Farmer SNAP program, which improves low-income access to local, healthy food. This data entry enables us to analyze the impact of the program, and thereby improve upon it to make local, healthy food more accessible and affordable. Opportunities to assist with other office tasks will likely be available.

Work with children at Community Outreach, Inc.

When:             Volunteers needed ASAP—flexible schedule (M-F)

Where:            Mari’s Place, 863 NW Reiman Ave., Corvallis, OR 97330

Description: Volunteers needed for our childcare center, Mari’s Place. Weekly shifts available for 2+ hours working with children under the age of six. Help supervise and provide playtime for the children, tell stories, sing, clean-up, and provide support and encouragement for individual children.

Mari's Place is open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Volunteers needed for all hours.

Volunteer Requirements: No childcare experience necessary, but we prefer someone who enjoys spending time with children.

Furniture Share Event Committee Member

Description:   Furniture Share is a non-profit organization that provides furniture at no cost to families and individuals in need within the vulnerable populations in the communities in Linn & Benton counties. We hold two main fundraisers during the year, Albany Grapes & Grains and our Annual Texas Style BBQ and Hoedown. Furniture Share is in need of two volunteer committees to help organize these fundraising events.

Albany Grapes & Grains features local brews, wines, food and local businesses. This is an event that we would like to grow into a 3 day festival.

Annual Texas Style BBQ and Hoedown has a raffle, live and silent auction, live music and all you can eat Chicken and Brisket all for $20.00 per adult and kids 17 and under are free and August 2013 will be our 4th Annual BBQ.

We are looking for each committee to help with recruiting volunteers, sponsors, vendors, wineries, breweries, secure auction items, sell tickets, display posters around town, set up for the event and help clean up after the event is over.

Tutor at the Jackson Street Youth Shelter

When:          Mondays-Wednesdays from 6:00-7:15PM

Where:           Jackson Street Youth Shelter

Description:   OSU tutors are needed to help tutor youth in various subject areas. Youth will be 10 to 17 year olds. Homework times are from 7:30-8:45pm Sunday through Thursday every night. You can sign up for 1-3 evenings per week. Personal tutors are needed as well and personal tutoring is more flexible in scheduling. Volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer application, have a background check, and go through a brief orientation.

Home Construction - Habitat for Humanity

Description:   Benton Habitat for Humanity is currently working on two homes and would love to accommodate groups from OSU to help. Construction is on-going throughout the school year and summer. ReStore Volunteer-Habitat for Humanity

When:  Tuesday through Saturday, between 9am and 5pm, year round

Description:   ReStore is a retail outlet for donated new and gently used building and home improvement materials.  Volunteers are primarily needed Tuesday-Friday between 3-5pm and any shift on Saturdays.  Volunteers would help with the following; organizing shelves, processing incoming donations, filing, organizing volunteer registrations, and other miscellaneous tasks. Everything sold at the ReStore is donated and the proceeds go towards building new houses.

Linn Benton Food Share

Where:               33747 Looney Lane, Tangent, Oregon

Description:   Repackaging food (ex. Frozen vegetables, cereal, beans, etc.) into smaller containers that will be distributed to those experiencing food insecurity. Projects can hold 20-30 participants.  Available shifts: flexible Monday-Sunday for a 2 hour block.

MONTHLY OPEN HOUSE: Every last Thursday of the month from 6-8pm is an open house for volunteers as well (with the exception of December). 2014 open house dates include Thursday January 20th, Thursday February 27th, March 27th, April 24th, May 29th, June 26th, July 31st, August 28th, September 25th, October 30th, and November 27th.
